Write down your requirements
Is the project a bedroom, a staircase or an outside door? Do you prefer a matt finish or gloss? What colour is there now, and what colour would you like? Bring these questions to the discussion about the finish. This lets you compare products for the same task.
Look at a physical sample
Choose a few swatches and view them in the actual location. Record your preference in daylight and under your evening lighting. Then ask about preparation, finishing and maintenance for that choice. Have the selected products named in the quote, so the agreed specification stays clear.
