Start with the end result

For each room, write down what you want to keep and what you want to change. Consider layout, lighting, connections, flooring and wall finishes. A simple sketch and a decision list are useful starting points for a discussion with contractors.

Make dependencies visible

Ask each trade which work must be complete before they begin. Does anything behind a wall still need changing? Who checks whether a surface is ready to finish? Put these questions into a shared schedule. The correct order depends on the actual work and the products selected.

Plan the handover too

Agree who checks each completed element before the next stage begins. Keep photographs of work that will later be hidden. Collect product names and maintenance information in the same folder. Completion then means more than a final walk through the room: the information about your project stays together.

Take this into your project

  • List decisions for each room.
  • Ask what each next stage needs.
  • Plan checks between different types of work.
